John 1:1-5 --
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it."
Jesus Christ is the Word of God. Here we see that He was in the beginning with God, meaning that He has no beginning and thus is co-eternal with God. Not only that, but God/Jesus made all things, and life itself was and is in Him. You should note the illusions to the account of creation in Genesis 1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
We see that the Triune God, each person of the Godhead, was involved in creation -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father planned it, the Son performed the Father's plan, and the Holy Spirit is the power by which the plan is performed.
So it is in renewal/recreation/regeneration. The Father planned redemption, Christ performed/accomplished redemption in His becoming flesh, fulfilling all righteousness, atoning for sin, rising from the grave, and ascending/returning to the Father. The power by which God's plan of redemption is performed by the Son, is the power of God the Holy Spirit. Christ was filled with the Spirit, and now fills His people with His Life-Giving Spirit to unite us to Himself and live holy and godly lives according to His Word.
So in Christ, truly, is light and life, at creation and redemption. This light shined into the darkness at creation, and it shines into the darkness of sin in this world, and into the darkened hearts of sinners that He is saving and redeeming. The darkness cannot overcome it, or "comprehend it". So God's sovereign power and redemption is seen to prevail over all darkness and wickedness, either through redemption or judgment for rejection of Christ.
